Mekong Delta

After a really good sleep, we had an 8 o’clock start for today’s trip down to the Mekong Delta about 100kms away.  Ian met the other 4 people who were booked on our tour in the lift and apparently they’d booked a “private tour” which is why were not all together, an additional cost of £295pp – or free for the remaining 4 people (ie us and Malcolm/Lydia).

The drive took about 2 hours on a combination of roads; Route 1 packed with motor scooters but also the Freeway (actually a toll road ?) which bans scooters.  We then transferred to a long wooden boat with an outboard motor, overhead canopy and lovely wicker chairs and cruised the waters of the delta.

First we stopped at a family owned/run coconut processing farm, where whole coconuts are delivered by boat and a little man takes the outside off, another chops it in half and the last one removes the husks – all very labour intensive.

Then we stopped at a place and watched rush matting being made by hand and had a lovely snack of fruits: Jack Fruit, Mango, Pomelo, Rambutan, a type of plum (also known as water apple) and some delicious popadom-like things made of tapioca and rice.

Then we walked a little way and had lunch which consisted of spring rolls, followed by fish wraps then pork and rice – delicious.  I also managed to make friends with this little girl, so much so that I then had trouble shaking her off and she nearly fell in the water following us over a small bridge!
