Holiday Starts Today

Here we are at Gatwick, our flight isn't until 12 noon but we had to be here 3 hours before and the airport was practically deserted so our Fast Track passes through security etc. didn't really amount to much.

So now were sitting in the club lounge watching the snow come down and hoping our flight won't be delayed.

I never know whether it's a good idea to consult Trip Advisor; the reviews for Vietnam Airways are mostly terrible citing very old, clapped out planes, gaffer tape holding seats together, no IFE (had to look that one up - In Flight Entertainment), overhead lights that don't turn etc etc.  Hopefully it's just moany people who bother to post reviews and all the happy travellers have kept their thoughts to themselves.

The flight time to Ho Chi Minh City is 12 hours and with a 7 hours time difference we arrive at 7am.  I really hope we'll be able to get some quality sleep on the plane as the tour starts as soon as we land with a quick breakfast followed by a tour of the City.  I think its going to be quite a tiring holiday.

It's a very small group, only 8 of us, so hopefully we'll all get along and there won't be any "knobs" but we shall see.  We've met some characters on previous holidays and it's quite fun watching the dynamics of a group change as people get to know/like/dislike each other.

Well that's the lot for now, next post should be from Saigon, unless the plane totally disintegrates on the way over.

Just 4 More Sleeps

Very, very excited – Ian and I are off on our travels again, this time heading East to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

We haven’t ventured this way for some 12 years when Ian was hospitalised on our way back to Bangkok Airport.  We had 3 scary days whilst he was prodded, poked and investigated but in the event it wasn’t Typhus, Dengue Fever, Malaria or one of a host of other nasties, but “just” gastroenteritis.  I knew he was better when we finally got to the airport and his eyes lit up at the sight of a giant yellow M!!!

So we fly to Ho Chi Minh City (apparently still called Saigon by its residents), then to Siem Reap (Cambodia), Luang Prabang (Laos) then back to Hanoi, Vietnam .
